Saturday at the Recycling Center

By Jerry | July 29, 2007

As is the usual in the Oberholtzer household, I spent Saturday with my sons loading yard waste and cardboard to take to Snellville’s Recycling Center. When the city first opened the center in the early 1990’s, it quickly became a way for citizens to get rid of their waste and recyclables without having to drive to a land fill and pay to have your truck unloaded.

But for all the good that original recycling center did for our city and the environment, it became a hassle to get in and out, sometimes citizens were waiting thirty minutes or more just to get in and get their vehicles unloaded. In 2000, right after my election to city council, I led the movement to expand our recycling center to better meet the city’s needs. After working diligently to get the space and plans to move forward, in 2002 we broke ground just across the street from the original recycling center. Two years later, we were cutting ribbons and helping to unload the first loads of yard waste and recyclables.

During these first three years of service to our community, the recycling center has been offering a valuable environmentally friendly option to you, our citizens, and every year the center becomes closer to becoming financially self-sufficient. Money aside, the service we as the city provide to our citizens is something a dollar amount cannot be affixed to.

The next time you find yourself unloading cardboard at our center, make sure you take the time to thank all of our employees and volunteers who make this service the value it is. If you like what we’re doing as a city, and have ideas to further improve our commitment to the community and the environment, let me know! With your support, I will be able to continue this commitment and the quality progress we all have come to value in Snellville.

I hope to see you next Saturday at the Recycling Center!

Although I rarely visit the recycling center myself, I know it is an outstanding facility and unique among cities of similar size to Snellville. The City staff that operate the center are most helpful, kind, and professional. They really seem to enjoy their role improving Snellville.

I understand communities involved in active recycling such as Snellville also have lower incidents of illegal dumping thereby improving the quality of life for the entire community — even for those like myself that don’t recycle as much as I should.

Congrats Mayor for the foresight and support of this wonderful City amenity.
