Mayor’s Blog growing, gets mention in the AJC

By Jerry | August 1, 2007

The past couple of days I have been receiving comments, calls and emails from citizens and non-citizens alike concerning the issues I have been discussing here on my Blog. It’s truly been exciting to watch my site grow and start to become a focal point for citizen discussion. One of the many calls I have received this week came from Atlanta Journal-Consitution writer D.Aileen Dodd. To read her article, Click Here.

The reason I decided to write a post on this, is because “spreading the word” is our most effective, easiest, and taxpayer-friendly means of city-to-citizen communication. Snellville is at an obvious disadvantage when it comes to news coverage in the Atlanta area. The City of Atlanta, and it’s biggest suburbs get the most coverage on our local airwaves and news-lines. Even in Gwinnett, Snellville is not the county seat, the biggest city, nor does it have I-85 close by. When events happen here, to find out about it usually requires luck to see that 3-minute news clip at 11.

But who can blame them? In Snellville we pride ourselves on our sense of community, not our newsworthiness.

In the world of major-market news, the idea that “no news is good news” means that nothing bad has happened today. For Snellville, this is good news. Without delving into statistics, crime rates for the City of Snellville are down from what it was last year. Safe cities rarely make headlines, which is both good and bad for Snellville. It’s good that crime is down, but it’s bad that the rest of the metro area does not get to see the good projects we have accomplished, and have in the making for Snellville.

That’s where my blog comes back into play. If we can get the word out about this site, then hopefully we can get the nightly news watchers to log on every day or so and see what is happening in their hometown. But this is more than a news source (by-the-way, this isn’t an official city news source), it’s a discussion of the issues I find important, and what I have been finding out, is that these issues are also important to you, our citizens.

So take some time to browse the site, we’ve been adding features everyday, making the site more interactive and informative. If you get a chance, check out my calendar for upcoming events and meetings pertaining to Snellville. TELL YOUR NEIGHBORS about this site! Join my newsletter, bug me for a t-shirt, just whatever you do, make sure we spread this positive message throughout our area.

Thanks for taking time to read this site, and as always, I look forward to your comments, phone calls and emails.
