Performing Arts in Snellville: The New London Theatre is Growing!

By Jerry | August 16, 2007

Over the past few weekends, I have had the opportunity to help the New London Theatre, Snellville’s own performing arts troupe, clean out and prepare their new home in the Snellville Plaza for renovation. I have always been supportive of the performing arts in Snellville, and to see the commitment that they have shown to their theatre and to our community, I think it’s time the city of Snellville return that commitment.

Below is a press release by Jonathan Cates concerning the renovating of their new home:

The New London Theatre, the community theatre in Snellville, Georgia is moving into a new location. After years at South Gwinnett High School, the troupe is working on re-opening the old Snellville cinema in Snellville Plaza. It is at highway 78 on the northeast corner of the intersection with highway 124, in the corner where the “rug shop” had taken up residence since the cinema closed in the 1980’s. Many residents of Gwinnett remember seeing “Star Wars”, “Saturday Night Fever”, and “Close Encounters” there, but now, such live theatre performances as “Godspell”, “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe”, “Arsenic and Old Lace”, and “Beauty and the Beast” will be seen by thousands in our own community theatre. The theatre has a website, http://www.newlondontheatre.org where one may check for plays, activities, sign up for the newsletters, and order tickets online.

On Saturday, August 11, the troupe held its second workday, and, for the second time, attracted the city Mayor, the honorable Jerry Oberholtzer, who assisted the troupe in preparing the building to house live theatre.

In Lawrenceville, the Aurora Theatre was just constructed off of their city square to fit the needs of the local performing arts group there. Imagine if Snellville were to make the same kind of commitment that Lawrenceville has? Unfortunately for Snellville, we are at a disadvantage when it comes to funding compared to Lawrenceville. Lawrenceville is a larger city, with a larger tax base, and they also have their own utilities department that brings in a large portion of the city’s revenue.

But money hasn’t stopped the New London Theatre from growing. Their move to the Snellville Plaza has shown a commitment by their management to stay in our Community, and as Mayor, I will remain firm in my committment to support the theatre’s growth and productivity for years to come.

I think it’s time we as a city looked to help bring the New London Theatre into our emerging city center. The theatre could become a pillar for our downtown to grow around.

Let me know what you think about the New London Theatre, and my idea to bring them into the City Center. Don’t you think it’s time the City of Snellville make this kind of commitment to the performing arts?

For sure, I have been enjoying their performances anywhere they perform, would love to see the community come together and give them a derserving place and a much needed helping hand.
