August 13th City Council Meeting Notes

By Jerry | August 14, 2007

Approvals, denials, and other happenings from the August 13th Snellville City Council Meeting

OUT-PARCEL TO BE DEMOLISHED:

The City Council awarded a $52,000 contract to Smithco Construction LLC. of Gainesville to have the last standing piece of the old Oakland Village Shopping Center demolished. This out parcel which sat in front of the old Kroger, and now the new City Hall has been the home to Little Caesars Pizza notably amongst other businesses.

The contract calls for the complete demolition and removal of debris in 30 days. The city will then have the area sodded and irrigated. Once this is done, it will create a true front yard for our city hall, and will make the City Hall more visible along US 78.

CITY COMMITS $9,000 TO PARTNERSHIP GWINNETT:

Also last night, the council approved the Mayor to make a donation of $9,000 to Partnership Gwinnett. The following is an excerpt from the Partnership Gwinnett website explaining the project:

Partnership Gwinnett is an exciting visioning initiative for a better Gwinnett. At the end of the six month process, we will receive the foundation of a long-term strategic community and economic development plan from Market Street Services, one of the nation’s leading economic development consultants that will include:

  • A clear view of Gwinnett’s strengths, weaknesses, and competitive standing
  • An inclusive process that involves all segments of the community
  • Specific opportunities leading to sound, balanced development
  • A comprehensive view of a healthy future that embraces the economic, social, educational, and cultural life of the area
  • Identification of vulnerabilities and how to deal with them
  • A long-term perspective that avoids quick-fix approaches, and
  • A framework for measuring progress.

The project deliverables will include an Economic and Demographic Profile, Competitive Assessment, Target Business Analysis, Community and Economic Development Strategy, and Implementation Plan and Executive Summary.

The City of Snellville now joins the following Cities and Entities as sponsors of Partnership Gwinnett: City of Auburn, City of Buford, City of Braselton, City of Duluth, City of Norcross, City of Lilburn, City of Grayson, Gwinnett Village CID, Georgia Gwinnett College Foundation, Andersen, Tate & Carr, Anderson Insurance, Arcadis, Bowen Family Homes, C.A.B., Cadillac Jack, Scientific Atlanta, CISCO, E2E Resources, Inc., E.R.
