Son Graduates from F.R.O.G. Week at North Georgia

By Jerry | August 22, 2007

This past Sunday Roxann and I drove to Dahlonega to see our youngest son Paul graduate from his basic training program as a new cadet at North Georgia College and State University. At North Georgia, the program is known as FROG week. FROG stands for Freshman Recruit Orientation Group. During this six-day training course, Paul was subjected to long days of training, getting dirty, 2-minute showers, and learning what it means to be a cadet at North Georgia. Aside from the marching and early morning exercise, Paul got the chance to crawl through mud pits, climb and rappel 60 foot walls, jump through rivers and learn the rigors of being a soldier. But while Paul may be glad his FROG week is over, classes start Today (Wednesday, August 22), and he may be wishing he was elsewhere crawling through the mud!

North Georgia College and State University is one of six Senior Military Academies in the Nation (excluding the Service Academies). The others include Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Virginia Military Institute, The Citadel, and Norwich University. As Georgia’s only 4-year Military University, North Georgia offers it’s cadets the option of joining the armed services after graduation. Paul is majoring in Criminal Justice with ambitions of either commissioning as an army officer or perusing a career with the FBI or another federal agency after graduation.

We are very proud of Paul and all that he has accomplished in just his first six days at school. In the Oberholtzer Family we value the importance of Higher Education. With two sons at Clemson University and now one at North Georgia, our children are learning the skills and knowledge necessary to make our community a better place to live in the future. It is my hope as their Father and Mayor of our city, that I can foster an environment here in Snellville to attract all of our community’s children back to our city to grow and raise their families.

My sons have made a commitment by attending schools of Higher Education to better themselves for their future and ours. As Mayor, I make the same commitment everyday to you, the citizens of this city, to make our community a safe and thriving environment for parents to continue to raise their families as Roxann and I have done for over 20 years. We are proud of Paul in his new endeavors in life, and we take pride in the community we have raised our children in. You should be too, lets continue the quality progress for our future generations.
