In Snellville, the city where every politician is somebody’s enemy, City Councilman Bruce Garraway qualified to run for mayor Thursday.
Garraway is seeking to oust incumbent Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer on Nov. 6, when voters in cities and towns across Georgia go to polls.
“I love Snellville and the people who have made it their home,” Garraway said, “and Snellville needs a mayor who can be relentlessly positive about our great city. Nobody will work harder than I will to make that happen.”
Garraway was being polite. Don’t expect that to last.
In Snellville, no political disagreement is too small, and every argument is rooted in a long-running Hatfield-McCoy-like feud between the town’s old guard and new guard.
Garraway is backed by supporters of ex-mayor Emmet Clower, who governed Snellville for a quarter-century until 1999, when he was defeated by Brett Harrell, a newcomer who ran on a platform of change.
Oberholtzer, who succeeded Harrell in 2003, is seeking a second term in an office that is now limited to two terms.
“[Garraway's] been running for mayor for three years so now, thankfully, it’s official,” Oberholtzer said. “I’m glad he’s out here in front and we can settle the issues between us instead. I look forward to debating the issues with him.”
