U.S. Serviceman Thanks Mayor Oberholtzer

By Jerry | October 3, 2007

Major Gregory Anderson, U.S. Air Force Reserves, has returned home recently after a year’s duty in Iraq. Prior to deployment overseas, Major Anderson worked with Snellville’s Mayor at Columbia Engineering Firm. Now that Major Anderson has returned to his home safely, he wanted to thank his former manager and mentor for his support and his graciousness during such a difficult departure.

Mayor Oberholtzer explained that Major Anderson was a member of his engineering design team and that they worked together for several years. They completed several Snellville projects together including an expansion project for the First Baptist Church in Snellville, so Snellville was a popular conversation between the two of them. “Greg was promoted one day, and notified of his deployment orders the next; it was difficult to witness a good employee, husband, father and friend, go off to war” recalls Mayor Oberholtzer. “It really hit home”, he further reflected.

Understanding a Mayor’s love for their respective city, Major Anderson felt that a public expression of gratitude on the heart of Snellville soil was appropriate and presented Mayor Oberholtzer with a beautifully framed American Flag at a recent council meeting.

Mayor Oberholtzer expressed that he was ever so humbled to receive such a heartwarming gift from one of our U.S. Servicemen, especially since “it is we that should honor him, and all our service men and women for the ultimate sacrifice in the sanctity of public service”. Mayor Oberholtzer is truly touched by Major Anderson’s gesture and overjoyed that he has returned home safely to his family.
