Setting the Record Straight (again): I did vote YES to the Sex Offender Ordinance

By Jerry | October 21, 2007

In a recent automated voice message to the citizens of Snellville, Bruce Garraway is claiming that I voted against City Ordinance 2006-03 - Sexual Offenders and Sexual Predators. This ordinance increases the minimum distance that Registered Sex Offenders can reside from community facilities such as schools, churches, parks, etc. Bruce’s message is just plain wrong, official records show that I voted YES to this ordinance.

Below are the actual minutes from the April 26, 2006 City Council meeting highlighting the date, my attendance, and the unanimous 4-0 vote to enact the ordinance.

If you have any questions about my voting record during my 8 years on council and as mayor, please feel free to contact me using the contact the mayor button at the top of this page or by any of the methods listed on this site!

Simply amazing! If Bruce is willing to downright lie about this, just think what other lies he is telling us. Jerry - I hope you win; I can’t imagine having Bruce “hates the truth” Garraway leading Snellville for four (4) years.

Mayor Oberholtzer, you were absolutely correct to be hesitant to support the Snellville “sex offender ordinance” introduced by Garraway. Although you stated different, valid reasons for being hesitant, the most important reason why the ordinance should not have been supported is that it will do nothing good for Snellville. There is not a single expert in the state of Georgia or in our entire country who supports these blatantly immoral, anti-American, one-size-fits-none Banishment laws. Not one. At best, Banishment will do nothing. At worst, citizens, including children, will be gravely harmed, as occurred in the tragic murder of 6-year-old Christopher Barrios in Brunswick. His blood is on the hands of Georgia’s legislators who were repeatedly warned that their laws would greatly increase the likelihood of such events.

But even putting aside the ineffectiveness and the damage of Banishment, implementing such a law is morally wrong because it is NIMBYism, which is hallowed ground for the immoral and cowards. Garraway surely researched the facts before he championed his ordinance so he knew that the ordinance was ill-advised. He knew that people listed on Georgia’s godforsaken sex offender registry are in reality not any significantly greater danger than anyone else. They are certainly much less of a danger to a stranger than many, many other classes of people. Besides, if Garraway does think the people his ordinance targets are a danger, what does that say about him? Nothing good.

It says that he thinks Snellville might have a problem and a future growing problem and that his solution is to push it off onto someone else. His “solution” is to push his make-believe “problem” off onto his neighbors, perhaps Lawrenceville or Loganville. How immoral is that? Additionally, he claims he is religious, attends church, and all that. How typical.

How should Snellville’s neighbors respond to Garraway’s aggression? By pushing their real problems onto Snellville.

Real leaders solve problems, not push them off onto other people. Even imaginary problems. People who practice NIMBYism have no business being part of any government, at any level, anywhere. Garraway is not a good, moral leader.
