Sidewalks in Snellville: Doing More to Bring our Community Together
By Jerry | October 30, 2007
Over the past four years as your Mayor, I have been working behind the scenes to expand and enhance our sidewalks throughout Snellville. Over the next four years, I want to continue adding sidewalks, all the while installing curb and drainage to fix our numerous storm-water issues here in Snellville.
But we’re not just adding sidewalks in random places, we are creating a system of trails that connect neighborhoods, and allow you to walk along busy roads that might not be pedestrian-safe otherwise. These additions, along with my plans for small green space areas throughout our community, will create an environment safe for walking and really open up our residential areas for recreational uses.
Since being elected to council in 1999, I have overseen the addition of sidewalks down Dogwood Road, Harbour Oaks Road, Summit Chase Drive, Brooks Drive, Green Turf Drive, Classic Drive, and Oak Road in our downtown area.
In addition, all new subdivisions and commercial developments in the last four years have been required to install sidewalks. We also planned to install curb, drainage and sidewalks on Maple Street in the E.R. Snell neighborhood, but those citizens opposed its construction.
With your support of my re-election, I plan to expand our sidewalk system with construction down the length of Oak Road, North Road, Greenvalley Way, and Skyland Drive just to name a few.
Last night at a meeting with the homeowners of Hickory Hills and other neighborhoods in the Lenora Church Road area, I talked about sidewalks and how they help bring our neighborhoods and community together. My opponent talked about how we should not be installing any more sidewalks in the Brookwood or Summit Chase area.
Adding sidewalks in Snellville does more than just open up our community to walking and leisure uses, it enhances the aesthetics of our neighborhoods, fixes our drainage issues, and helps increase property values. The money for these projects comes not from your city property taxes, but from Gwinnett County’s annual SPLOST tax. So these enhancements to our city come at no additional charge to you the citizens.
It’s a win-win situation, and with your vote in next week’s election, I can continue to lead this city in the right direction, installing sidewalks and bringing neighborhoods together.
If you have any questions about sidewalks in Snellville, or if you know of a road that would benifit from the addition of sidewalks, please let me know! You can use the contact button at the top of this page, or any of the methods listed in the left-hand column.
Thanks again for your support!

It will be so nice to have the ability to walk places and for parents with little ones in strollers to go for walks that actually GO to somewhere - for instance, to businesses, where we can do something and spend money locally too!
Also safer for pedestrians AND drivers….and the obvious health benefits.
My only suggestion is that the sidewalks be wide enough for two people to walk side by side. It costs more but in the long run, I think it’s a good investment because I have noticed that people are more likely to USE wider sidewalks.
