17th Annual Deep South Classic brings Basketball Action to Snellville
By Jerry | December 28, 2007
Since 1991, the Deep South Classic has brought quality high school basketball action to Snellville over the Christmas holiday break. This year is no exception. With teams from all over the lower-48, undefeated Dacula High School and our own hometown Brookwood and South Gwinnett Boys and Girls teams, the tournament gives teams a chance to visit Snellville and showcase their talents in front of fans and scouts alike.
The City of Snellville has been a very big part of the tournament. The city has been a corporate sponsor of the tournament for many years now. Our sponsorship and support has helped the tournament grow into its current format that includes 32 teams and is hosted at both Brookwood and South Gwinnett.
As Mayor, I get the opportunity to write a welcome letter to all the fans that is published on the inside of the tournament program, I also get to conduct the ceremonial tip-off to begin the tournament at each host site. My presence at these events works as a sort of advertisement for our city. It shows the participants and the fans that their city is involved in it’s own community activities.
I want to thank Les Witmer, the organizer of the Deep South Classic for all his hard work, the tremendous growth of the tournament and for his commitment to our schools and the city of Snellville. As the Deep South Classic grows every year, so will the bond between our city government and our community.
With this great event here in Snellville, wouldn’t it be great if our city had a venue that could host this tournament as well as other civic and community events. From graduations to high school sports and youth tournaments, a venue with seating up to 3,500 would be ideal to help set Snellville apart and make it the best city in Gwinnett. What are your thoughts and opinions on creating this kind of facility in Snellville?
The tournament dates are December 26th - 29th. For Information on Times and Tickets for remaining games, please check their website at http://www.deepsouthclassic.com
