Sunday Sales take to the Airwaves!
By Jerry | February 26, 2008
Rich Sullivan, AKA “Sully”, a 5-year Snellville resident is making his presence known both at the city council meeting and over the local airwaves.
Sully is the afternoon DJ on DaveFM 92.9, and he’s not shy about voicing his opinion on Snellville politics during Atlanta’s afternoon commute. Those who hear his show know well what Sully is complaining about…
Blue Laws!
Sully is a big NBA and NFL fan, and not being able to enjoy an adult beverage at our local Applebees on Sunday has him questioning “Why?”.
But it goes beyond just being able to have a drink on a Sunday, it has to do with economic viability and the survival of Snellville as a thriving dining destination. For the past few years I have been an adamant proponent of allowing our restuarants to serve seven days a week. Gwinnett County allows Sunday Sales, and this has already cost Snellville dearly. The Avenues has opened up just to the north of the city limits on 124 and is pulling business away from inside-the-city establishments.
Sully understands this as well as I do, but his voice is 64,000 watts strong. Last night (Monday 2/25), Sully came to City Hall and questioned those on council why they oppose Sunday Sales.
from the Gwinnett Daily Post, February 26th:
Local radio personality addresses council
Snellville resident and Dave FM afternoon radio host Richard Sullivan, better known as “Sully” to listeners, addressed Oberholtzer and council members during Monday’s meeting.
Sullivan first voiced his praise and support for the city police officers.
“I think they care genuinely about what goes on here,” Sullivan said.
Sullivan then asked the city leaders why Sunday sales of alcohol are prohibited in Snellville.
“Businesses in the city are handcuffed for 52 out of 365 days of the year. Why do we limit ourselves like this?”
Councilman Robert Jenkins replied by saying that alcohol abuse in the U.S. is a big problem.
“I think the abuse is because of the ready availability. … I have not and will not support liquor by the drink sales in Snellville.”
Sully addressed his radio audience today with a recap of the meeting from last night, Click the Play Button below to hear the radio clip:
Sounds like things may get exciting in Snellville this Spring!

It is nice to see you are back on the interwebs, Mayor. You might want to fix the link to the GDP article, it seems to be broken. Also, I would heed your blog much more credence if you regularly posted on here. Instead of using this as a tool for reelection (which it appears is the site’s only purpose), maybe you could keep us up-to-date on the goings on in the City and your opinions.

Chris,
I’m working on getting back into the swing of things with the blog. I apologize for not being more proactive with the updates. I hope to get at least one or two posts in a week. We’ve got a lot of exciting projects coming up this year for Snellville, and since the local news pays us no attention, I will be using the blog as a means to “get the word out”.
If there is something specific you would like me to blog on, please feel free to email me at Jerry@JerryOberholtzer.com
Also, I checked the link to the GDP and it’s working fine for me. Here is the URL, you might want to try copy and pasting it.

Thanks again for your comments and for reading the blog (even through all the inactivity lately)

Sully might have to cut back a few beers even if the LBTD was passed in Snellville, to be able to pay the Stormwater Management Fee that’s coming later this year. Not sure how many beers it will mean

Darla,
Thank you for bringing up storm water management! We actually had a meeting Monday at 5:30 with our consultants on the matter. We took a look at a couple of different scenarios and plan on presenting everything to our citizens in the upcoming weeks. All to be done before we vote on setting the rates.
In the next few days I will update the blog with a big entry on Storm Water and what it means for Snellville. I will also discuss in detail the costs and benefits, as well as our schedule for implementation.
Stay Tuned!
Jerry
